Configuring Auto-Detection Settings
Motra's auto-detection uses AI to automatically recognize exercises and count reps during your workout. This article covers the practical settings you can adjust to fine-tune how auto-detection works for you. For conceptual background on how auto-detection technology works, see our other auto-detection articles.
How to Access Auto-Detection Settings
There are two ways to get to the Auto-Detection settings:
From the Main Settings
Open Motra and tap the Settings gear icon.
Scroll to the Workout Settings section and tap Workout Settings.
Tap Auto Detection Control.
From an Active Workout
While in a workout, open Workout Settings.
Tap Auto Detection Control under the Workout Settings section.
AI Model Selection
At the top of the Auto-Detection settings screen you will find the Exercise Detection section with two controls:
Exercise Tracking Model
This displays which AI model is currently active for your account:
Motra AI 2.0 — Available to premium (Pro) subscribers. Uses advanced Neural Kinetic Profiling for more accurate exercise recognition.
Motra AI 1.0 — The standard model available to all users.
Your model is determined by your subscription tier and is displayed automatically. To upgrade to Motra AI 2.0, subscribe to Motra Pro.
Tip: Tap the Motra AI 2.0 banner with the "Learn More" link at the top of the settings screen to learn about the latest AI capabilities.
AI Learning
Toggle AI Learning on or off.
When enabled, Motra AI continuously adapts to your unique movement patterns over time, improving detection accuracy the more you use it.
We recommend keeping this on for the best experience.
Tap the info icon next to AI Learning to read more about how progressive learning works.
Minimum Rep Threshold
The Minimum Reps setting controls the fewest number of reps Motra must detect before it counts a set.
In the Auto-Detection settings screen, find the Minimum Reps row.
Tap the picker on the right side to select a value from 1 to 8.
Your selection is saved automatically.
Recommended Settings
Default / General use: A threshold of 3–4 reps works well for most users. It filters out false positives from non-exercise movements while still capturing light warm-up sets.
Heavy singles or doubles: If you frequently train with very low rep ranges (powerlifting, heavy strength work), lower the threshold to 1 or 2 so those sets are not missed.
Higher threshold: Setting a value of 5–8 can help if you find the AI is occasionally logging movements that are not real sets, but be aware that any set under that count will be ignored.
Tip: Tap the info icon next to Minimum Reps to open a help article with more detail on how this threshold affects detection.
Tracking Cache (Reset Detection Cache)
Motra AI learns and adapts to your specific movements over time. The tracking cache stores this learned data. If detection accuracy seems off, resetting the cache gives the AI a fresh start.
When to Reset
Auto-detection is consistently misidentifying exercises after a long period of use.
You have significantly changed your training style or form.
You are troubleshooting detection issues and want to rule out stale learned data.
How to Reset
In the Auto-Detection settings screen, scroll to the Exercise Detection Cache section.
Tap Reset Detection Cache (shown in red with a warning icon).
A confirmation dialog will appear: "Are you sure you want to reset your cache? This will reset Motra AI's understanding of your movements to a clean state. This action cannot be undone."
Tap Reset Cache to confirm, or Cancel to back out.
A toast confirmation will appear once the cache has been cleared.
Important: Resetting the cache cannot be undone. The AI will need to re-learn your movement patterns from scratch, so accuracy may temporarily decrease before improving again with continued use.
Privacy
At the bottom of the Auto-Detection settings screen there is a Privacy section with a link to Our Privacy Commitment. Tap it to read about how Motra handles your motion and workout data.
Tips for Getting the Best Auto-Detection Accuracy
Wear your Apple Watch on your wrist correctly — Make sure it is snug and positioned properly. Check your wrist and Digital Crown orientation in Settings > Get Started.
Keep AI Learning enabled — The more workouts you do, the better the AI adapts to your movement patterns.
Start with a moderate minimum rep threshold — A value of 3–4 is a good starting point. Adjust up if you see false positives or down if legitimate sets are being missed.
Use consistent form — The AI learns your movement patterns. Consistent exercise form leads to better recognition over time.
Reset the cache only when necessary — If detection has become noticeably less accurate over time, a cache reset can help. Otherwise, let the AI continue learning.
Upgrade to Motra AI 2.0 — Pro subscribers get access to the latest detection model with Neural Kinetic Profiling for improved accuracy across more exercises.
