Workout Data Not Saving

Workout Data Not Saving -- What to Do

Having trouble with workout data not saving or going missing? This guide covers the most common scenarios and how to fix them.

1. "I finished my workout but my sets are missing"

When you tap Finish on a workout, Motra checks whether all your sets have been logged. If any sets are unlogged, you will see a screen titled "X/Y Sets Logged" with two options:

  1. "Log All Sets" -- This marks every unlogged set as complete and includes them in your saved workout. Choose this if you performed the sets but forgot to swipe them off during your session.

  2. "Discard X Unlogged Sets" -- This permanently removes all unlogged sets from the workout before saving. Only the sets you explicitly logged (by swiping right) will be saved. This option only appears if you have at least one logged set.

If your saved workout is missing sets, you likely tapped "Discard Unlogged Sets" when finishing. Unfortunately, discarded sets cannot be recovered after saving.

Tip: During your workout, swipe right on each set as you complete it. This logs the set in real time and ensures nothing is missed when you finish.

2. "My workout disappeared"

If your workout seems to have vanished after finishing, it is likely stuck in a pending upload state. This happens when Motra could not upload your workout to the server -- usually due to a weak or missing internet connection.

How to find and upload a pending workout:

  1. Open the Motra app and go to your Feed (home screen).

  2. If a workout is pending, you will see a banner you can tap to open the "Workout Processing" modal.

  3. The modal will display the message: "At least one of your recent workouts hasn't been uploaded yet."

  4. Tap "Upload Saved Workout" to retry the upload. Make sure your phone is connected to the internet.

  5. If the upload succeeds, you will see a confirmation toast and the workout will appear on your Feed.

If the upload fails, you will see an alert: "Unable to Save Workout -- Please ensure your phone is connected to the internet, and try again." Check your connection and try again.

WARNING about the "Clear" button: The "Clear" button in the Workout Processing modal permanently deletes all pending workout uploads from your device. It does not retry or fix anything. Only tap Clear if you are certain you do not need those workouts.

Important: 14-day automatic deletion. Workouts stuck in a pending upload state are automatically deleted after 14 days. Motra retries uploading in the background using an increasing interval (starting at 90 seconds, up to every 2 hours), but if 14 days pass without a successful upload, the workout data is removed with no warning. If your workout is pending, upload it as soon as possible.

3. "My Watch workout isn't on my phone"

Apple Watch workouts are saved locally on the Watch first. After you finish a workout, the Watch transfers the data to your iPhone for upload to Motra's servers. If the workout is not appearing on your phone, follow the steps below based on your situation.

If you saved the workout but it's not appearing

The workout may still be stored locally on your Watch and just needs to be re-sent to your phone.

  1. On your Apple Watch, open the Motra app.

  2. Tap ... (More) then tap Workout.

  3. You will see a list of locally saved workouts that have not yet been transferred.

  4. Tap the workout you want to recover and choose "Save Workout" to re-send it to your phone.

  5. Make sure your Watch and iPhone are connected (Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled) and the Motra app is open on your phone.

Note: Locally saved workouts are kept on the Watch for up to 14 days. After that, they are automatically removed.

If your Watch battery died mid-workout

If your Apple Watch ran out of battery during a workout, the data may still be recoverable. watchOS can retain in-progress workout data for up to 8 hours after the battery dies.

  1. Charge your Apple Watch as soon as possible (within 8 hours of the battery dying).

  2. Once the Watch turns back on, open the Motra Watch app.

  3. You should see a prompt to recover and save the interrupted workout. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Important: This recovery only works with Freeform workouts (workouts started without selecting a template). If you were using a template-based workout, the Watch may not be able to recover the session after a battery death.

If you accidentally deleted the workout

Unfortunately, once a workout is deleted from the Watch or phone, it cannot be recovered. The data is permanently removed.

If you remember the details of your workout, you can recreate it using the Manual Workout feature:

  1. Open the Motra app on your iPhone.

  2. Start a new workout and manually enter your exercises, sets, weights, and reps.

  3. Save the workout when finished.

If none of the above works

If your Watch workout is still not appearing after trying these steps, you can manually recreate the workout on your iPhone using the Manual Workout feature. If you believe there is a technical issue, reach out to our support team (see below) with details about your Watch model and what happened.

4. "My values changed on their own"

If the weight, reps, or other values in your workout sets changed without you editing them, the Auto Update Values (also called Smart Update) feature is likely the cause.

What Auto Update does: When enabled, Auto Update automatically adjusts the values of upcoming (not-yet-logged) sets based on changes you make to the current set. For example, if you change the weight on Set 2, Sets 3, 4, and beyond will update to match. The app describes it as: "Auto Update allows for faster reps & weight input by automatically updating subsequent sets based on the current sets input."

How to disable Auto Update:

  1. Open the Motra app and go to Settings (tap the gear icon).

  2. Under Workout Settings, tap Workout Settings.

  3. Tap "Auto Update Values".

  4. Toggle off "Watch Smart Update" to disable this feature on your Apple Watch.

Once disabled, changing a value on one set will not affect other sets.

5. "How do I set up auto-save reminders?"

Motra can remind you to save your workout so you do not accidentally leave a session running. There are two types of reminders:

Time-Based Reminder

This sends you a reminder after a period of inactivity during your workout.

  1. Open the Motra app and go to Settings.

  2. Under Workout Settings, tap Workout Settings.

  3. Tap "Workout Save Reminder".

  4. Toggle on "Time Based".

  5. Under "Remind Me After", choose your preferred inactivity duration: 15 Min, 30 Min, 45 Min, or 60 Min.

You will receive a notification to save your workout if the app detects no activity for the selected duration.

Location-Based Reminder

This sends you a reminder when you move away from the location where you started your workout.

  1. On the same Workout Save Reminder screen, toggle on "Location Based".

  2. If prompted, grant Motra location access in your device settings. If location services are disabled, you will see an alert: "Location Services Disabled -- Please enable location services in your device settings." Tap "Settings" to go directly to your device settings.

Once enabled, you will receive a reminder to save your workout when you move a certain distance away from your workout location.
